Franklin Noon Lion Dan Crass Honored as 2026 Franklin Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal

The Franklin Noon Lions Club is proud to congratulate our fellow Lion, Dan Crass, on being selected as the 2026 Franklin Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal. This well-deserved honor recognizes a lifetime of service to our country, our community, and those around him.

Dan’s journey of service began in 1970 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he trained as a Telecommunications Specialist, learning to operate teletype and cryptographic communications equipment. Shortly after marrying his wife, Ellen, he deployed to Vietnam in January 1971. Within hours of arriving at Bien Hoa Air Base, the base came under rocket attack—a powerful introduction to the realities of military service.

Following his tour in Vietnam, Dan continued his Air Force career with assignments that took him around the world. He served at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois before transferring to Izmir, Turkey, where he worked in a mobile communications unit assigned to NATO, collaborating closely with Turkish forces. Later, he cross-trained into electronics and served in New York before beginning a distinguished career in Air Force recruiting.

Over the next 17 years, Dan recruited and mentored future Airmen, trained new recruiters, supervised recruiting teams throughout the Midwest, and eventually became Recruiting Squadron Superintendent in Milwaukee, overseeing more than 110 recruiters and support personnel. He retired from the United States Air Force on June 30, 1995, after 25 years of dedicated service.

Throughout his career, Dan earned numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, recognizing his exceptional leadership and commitment to excellence.

Service has remained a family tradition for the Crass family. Dan’s son also retired from the United States Air Force after serving as a B-2 bomber pilot, while his daughter proudly served before using the GI Bill to earn her nursing degree. His wife, Ellen, dedicated 26 years of service as a civilian employee supporting the military.

Those of us in the Franklin Noon Lions Club know Dan not only as a veteran but as a friend, a dedicated volunteer, and someone who quietly exemplifies the Lions motto, “We Serve.” His humility, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others have made a lasting impact on our club and our community.

Congratulations, Lion Dan Crass, on this tremendous honor. We thank you for your service to our nation and to Franklin, and we are proud to celebrate your selection as the 2026 Franklin Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal.
